Science Olympiad sparks interest in STEM activities

On Thursday, May 21, East Union students and staff experienced their best day ever during the 2026 Science Olympiad. The Science Olympiad is a full-day event centered around science and STEM activities while also promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, communication, creative thinking, and collaboration. Throughout the day, students worked their way through seven different stations and activities, earning points along the way as teams competed for top honors.
In addition to recognizing teams with the highest point totals, the East Union staff also presented the Shane Slobada Science Superstar Award. This special award honors students who demonstrate the same qualities that Mr. Slobada brought to East Union throughout his 20-year career: kindness, laughter, hard work, and a willingness to help others.
After students completed all of the day’s activities, everyone gathered together in the gym for a special presentation from a guest speaker who shared their science expertise with our students. This year, we were fortunate to welcome Mr. Adam Klingensmith, a zoologist from the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium and a proud Deer Lakes School District graduate, who spoke to students about his experiences and career working with animals.
This incredible day would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the entire East Union staff. One staff member in particular pours her heart and soul into making this event a success each year — Mrs. Shelly Znosko.
The 2026 Science Olympiad was a tremendous success and a day filled with learning, laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable memories for our students. Events like this showcase the very best of East Union and the strong sense of community that makes our school so special.
