In connection to the novel Hatchet, fifth graders were treated by visitors from the PA Game Commission.

Officer Speicher and Miss Chloe, a PA Game instructor, brought porcupine quills and hair to view with hand lenses, then microscopes to see the barbed quills. Students made connections to the main character, Brian, getting quilled in the wilderness.
